Lily and the Pink Fairy Garden
✦ ✦ ✦
Once upon a time, in a little house at the edge of a sleepy village, there lived a girl named Lily. She had the warmest smile and the biggest imagination of anyone around, and her very favourite colour in all the world was pink. Her bedroom walls were pink, her favourite jumper was pink, and even her toothbrush was the most perfect shade of bubblegum pink you ever saw.One evening, just as the stars were beginning to blink awake, Lily climbed into bed and pulled her cosy blanket up to her chin. But instead of drifting off to sleep, she noticed something strange near her window.A tiny, shimmering light was hovering outside the glass."Psst! Lily!" said a tiny voice, sweet as a bell. "We've been waiting for you!"Lily tiptoed to the window and pressed her nose against it. There, floating on a moonbeam, was the most beautiful fairy she had ever seen. The fairy wore a gown the colour of rose petals, with wings that sparkled like morning dew, and a tiny crown woven from pink blossoms."My name is Fern," said the fairy, "and I am the keeper of the Pink Fairy Garden. Tonight is the one night of the year when a kind-hearted girl may visit, and you, Lily, were chosen."Lily's eyes went wide. "Me?""You," Fern smiled. "Take my hand."And in the blink of an eye, Lily found herself floating through the cool night air, lifted gently on the breeze, until below her she saw the most magical sight imaginable. The Pink Fairy Garden was a secret meadow tucked between two silver hills, glowing softly under the moon. Every flower was a different shade of pink, blush roses, candy-stripe daisies, raspberry foxgloves, and soft pink clover that seemed to hum a quiet lullaby. Tiny fairy lights floated between the petals like fireflies.Dozens of fairies fluttered about, laughing and dancing. Some were painting flower petals with dewdrops. Others were weaving soft blankets from dandelion fluff for little animals sleeping nearby. One group of fairies was arranging moonbeams into a soft, silver canopy overhead."This is where we make the magic that gives everyone good dreams," Fern explained. "Every flower holds a dream inside. When the night wind carries the petals, the dreams float through windows and into sleeping hearts.""That's why my dreams are always so lovely," Lily breathed."Exactly," said Fern, laughing like a tiny silver bell.Fern took Lily to the very heart of the garden, where the largest flower of all stood. A great, glorious pink bloom as big as an umbrella, its petals glowing with a warm, rosy light."This," said Fern proudly, "is the Dream Lily. We named it after you, because your heart is so full of wonder and kindness."Lily reached out and gently touched one of the petals. It was softer than anything she had ever felt. Softer than her blanket, softer than a cloud, and the moment she touched it, a feeling of perfect, peaceful happiness spread all the way from her fingertips to her toes. The fairies gathered around and began to sing. A slow, gentle, humming song that swayed like a hammock in the breeze. The pink flowers nodded their heads. The fairy lights dimmed to the softest glow. Even the night sky seemed to take a long, slow breath.Lily felt her eyes growing heavy."It's time," Fern whispered, wrapping a tiny warm hand around Lily's finger. "The garden has given you tonight's dream. It will carry you all the way home."And so the breeze lifted Lily gently off her feet, and she floated back through the soft night air, over the silver hills, past the blinking stars, through her open window, and down, down, down into her lovely warm bed.She pulled the blanket up to her chin. She took one slow, sleepy breath. And she smiled, because in her heart, she could still feel the warmth of the Dream Lily's petal, and she could still hear the fairies singing, soft and sweet and far away.✦ ✦ ✦
And Lily closed her eyes...and drifted off to the most beautiful, pink, glowing, fairy-filled dream
she had ever had.Goodnight, Lily. Sweet dreams.
